A heavy two handed hitting human with enough power to cleave through their enemies with a combination of rage, skill and luck on their side.
Str 15 Dex 14 Con 15 Int 8 Wis 10 Cha 8 (27 point buy)
Str 16 Dex 14 Con 16 Int 8 Wis 10 Cha 8 (after racial mod)
Class 1 Barbarian / 5 Fighter (Battlemaster)
The three things that I wanted to achieve in this build are:
- Mighty two handed power!
- Unmatched Sword-fighting technique with immediate battlefield dominance.
- A good measure of luck.
For the race I went variant human, though if you wanted an even beefier Arngrim I guess you could go Goliath. I wanted to give him the best possible stats for destroying his foes and survivability on the field of battle so placed his bonuses into Str and Con.. I took dwarvish for the language, insight for the skill and Lucky for the feat. The language is something that can be anything really but insight is good for reading one’s opponents and Lucky is required for this build.
Class wise I went with Barbarian 1. This one level dip into barbarian give him the ability to rage. This will increase his damage, makes him hardier versus damage and advantage on Strength and Strength saving throws. The unarmored defense is a nice bonus but not needed since Arngrim will be using armor.
From level 2 to level 6 its all Fighter. The fighting style is Great Weapon because Arngrim is never caught dead without his great-sword. He is caught alive with a dagger…but that was at the beginning.
From there he gets second wind and action surge like all other fights. At level 4 the battlefield quakes with fear as it welcomes its newest Battle master Arngrim gets Combat superiority dice, student of war (which I choose smith’s tools for weapon maintenance) and three maneuvers. To try and represent some of his moves from Valkyirie Profile I chose Riposte, Sweeping Attack and Brace. All three represent what I feel is his fighting style and though I gave thought to lunge I found that it was not something necessary at this time. At level 5 Arngrim gains Great weapon master and truly earns his place as a demon possessed. Level 6 just adds the cherry on top with Extra Attack.
Background for Arngrim is Mercenary Veteran but solider could work as well. He enjoys being on the battlefield and if he can get paid for doing what he loves its a win win. You get Athletics and Persuasion which are useful skills though persuasion might not get too much play.
Spells
Well there is none for Arngrim since he is all about melee.
Equipment
Standard Barbarian kit with a great-sword starting out. To truly make him Arngrim I suggest getting your hands on half plate when you can get armor. In order to pull off his Final Blast attack I suggest getting your hands on a Flame tongue Great-sword. As for his father’s weapon I highly recommend the Dragon Slayer Great-sword!
