Urrus Aldren is the standard bearer for his vampiric lord, leading his armies to victory through fear, destruction, and sheer willpower. A dhampir descendant of his future patron, Urrus grew from a small farmhand pressed into his local lord’s service to a seasoned soldier fighting for the highest bidder as a mercenary. Once he was gifted the greatsword of his forebearer, his destiny brought him to raise an army and fight to bring the machinations of his patron to the theater of war.

Urrus Aldren (Vampiric Herald)

Race: Dhampir +1 to Str, Cha, and Con, Size: Medium, Ancestral Legacy: Perception and Intimidation, Darkvision, Deathless Nature, Spider Climb, Vampiric Bite.

Stats (27- point buy)

Str 15 Dex 10 Con 13 Int 9 Wis 13 Cha 13 (base stats)

Str 16 Dex 10 Con 14 Int 9 Wis 13 Cha 14 (racial and feat adjustment)

The three things that I wanted to achieve with this build are:

  1. Greatsword Slayer.
  2. Deathbringer on the Battlefield.
  3. Herald of the Vampiric Lord.

Background

For Background, I chose Knight of the Order for Urrus. This gives him the skills of Perception and Investigation, the Tool Proficiency of Lyre, the Language of Undercommon, and the Background Feature of All Eyes on You.

Class

For the Class makeup of this build, I went with Paladin 4 (Oath of Conquest)/Warlock 2 (The Undead). With these classes, he gains the ability to layer heavy damage with divine smites and his greatsword-wielding style of combat, the ability to layer fear and disabling effects on multiple foes, multiple ways to maintain as well as buff his hit points through temporary means, and the capability to maintain a host of concentrations spells while leading the vanguard of his patron’s armies to crushing victories.

Paladin 1 is the beginning of this build with the skills of Athletics and Insight, Divine Sense, and Lay on Hands.

Paladin 2 is where Urrus Aldren picks up the feature of Divine Smite, Spellcasting, and Fighting Style: Great Weapon Fighting.

Paladin 3 grants him Divine Health, Oath Spells: Armor of Agathys and Command, and Channel Divinity of Conquering Presence or Guided Strike. Conquering Presence is a key feature for this level since Urrus gains the ability to instill fear into each creature of his choice within 30 feet of himself.

Paladin 4 is where Urrus picks up the feat of Great Weapon Master. With this feat, he gains the ability to dish out extra damage at a diminished accuracy while he gets an extra attack when he fells an opponent.

Warlock 1 is where he gains Otherworldly Patron: The Undead, Pact Magic, Expanded Spell List: Bane and False Life, and Form of Dread. The critical feature of Form of Dread increases Urrus toughness, inflicts fear on a foe once when he lands an attack and becomes immune to being frightened.

Warlock 2 is the final level for this build with the feature of Eldritch Invocations: Agonizing Blast and Eldritch Mind. While the former enhances his eldritch blast with more damage, the latter gives him an advantage on Con saves to maintain concentrations on a spell.
