Adran Dalanthan is the middle child of three with a high intellect and fair physical strength. She never really found her niche in her community and desperately wanted to be known for something. Wishing to stand out from her siblings she decided to join her local militia and become a wizard. Upon completing her schooling she was recruited to a mercenary outfit called Norbert’s Priors. They were a group of ragtag mercs who prided themselves on accomplishing tough objectives. She grew and learned with them for five years, eventually calling them her new family. Unfortunately, they were tasked with protecting the flank of a retreating noble’s army and despite doing so they were nearly cut down to the last man. Adran was wounded by multiple arrows but was able to finish off the remaining foe. Alone, near death, and questioning why they were left without aid she wandered away to collect her thoughts and reconcile her growing frustration. Later she found out that they were used as a diversion so the noble could claim glory on another part of the battlefield. Her anger grew with this revelation and her innate magical nature manifested in a surge of magic that linked to her rage. Now she harnesses her magical rage to defeat her foes and conquer any battlefield she comes across.

Str 14 Dex 12 Con 14 Int 16 Wis 10 Cha 8 (racial and feat adjustment)

The three things that I wanted to achieve with this build are:

  1. Mage Rage.
  2. Rampant Magic Everywhere.
  3. Undercover Tank.

Race

For the Race of this build, I went with High Elf, With this race, she gains +2 to Dex and +1 Int, Darkvision, Keen Senses, Fey Ancestry, Trance, Elf Weapon Training, and the cantrip of Toll the Dead.

Background

For Background, I chose Mercenary Veteran. This gives her the skills of Athletics and Persuasion, Tool Proficiencies of Vehicles (Land) and Dragonchess Set, and the Background Feature of Mercenary Life. Mercenary Life gives her the inside knowledge on various Mercenary companies as well as landing jobs and finding places that take care of mercenaries with room and board.

Class

For the Class makeup of this build, I went with a mix of Wizard 2 (War Magic)/Barbarian 4 (Path of Wild Magic). With this combination of classes, she gains the ability to cast buffing magic, enhanced initiative, low-key tanking prowess with a quarterstaff and rage, and overwhelming magical shenanigans with the Wild Surge feature. With these skills and abilities, Adran will be able to hold her own in a fight before, during, and after every encounter.

Wizard 1 is the beginning of this build with the skills of Arcana and Investigation, Spellcasting, and Arcane Recovery. Arcane Recovery will allow Adran to gain back a spell slot once per short rest.

Wizard 2 is where Adran gains her wizard tradition in the form of War Magic. War Magic gives her Arcane Deflection and Tactical Wit. The former gives her the ability to increase her AC or a saving throw using a reaction while the latter increased her Initiative score with her Int modifier.

Barbarian 1 is where Adran gains her martial skills as well as her Rage once her company was defeated in battle. She gets Rage, Unarmored Defense, and Proficiencies in Shields and Martial Weapons.

Barbarian 2 gifts her the abilities of Reckless Attack and Danger Sense.

Barbarian 3 grants her the Primal Path of Wild Magic. This represents her innate magical talents responding to her deep-seated rage. With this, she gains the features of Magic Awareness and Wild Surge. Wild Surge is the key feature here since it gives her one of eight random effects that create beneficial results for the user.

Barbarian 4 is the last level of this build with the feat of Polearm Master. This feat will give her the ability to gain a bonus action attack with a staff weapon as well as gain an opportunity attack when someone enters her reach.
